U13s away at Colchester

Our U13s have recruited lots of new players recently...and under the direction of our president Bryn Lewis are starting to see great results.

A windswept venue awaited the Crus U13 squad as they made the journey down to Colchester for last weekend's fixture. But what a venue! It was to be the boys first full contact fixture on an artificial pitch at the very new and superb Colchester Rugby Club.
A group of 12 made the trip so the team was one player down, and our hosts kindly agreed to rotate a player into the team to make up the full number.
The conditions, having been pretty grim on the journey, did settle down for kick off.
Colchester were a well organised team and they dominated the early possession as they were moving the ball along the line fairly confidently. Handling was a challenge for both teams due to the wet conditions but this didn't stop the willingness to shift the ball into space through the hands.
Crus conceded early and a pattern soon emerged of missed tackles which allowed Colchester to make the most of the space and width of the pitch. They dominated territory and although the boys put up some resolute defence, once the line was broken it was difficult for covering players to get back and prevent a score.
Colchester also seemed to have the upper hand in the scrums and even when it was Crus ball, a forward shove from the opposition led to turnover ball on more than one occasion.
There were glimpses of some strong Crus running with metres gained and as the game progressed the ball was being moved out towards the touchline more frequently, but Colchester continued to break the line in attack and reaped the benefits.
A better second half showing meant that less points were conceded after the break, and the boys continued to show that trademark resilience and persistance despite being down in the match, which we have seen week after week.
A much deserved try to player of the match, Charlie, just before the final whistle, which saw him break through a few tackles and surge over the line was a pleasing end to an otherwise challenging game for the U13 once again.
The spirit and commitment of the group really is admirable as they continue to learn, practise and develop new systems and tactics moving forward.
Go Crus!
